Hoop was first licensed in 2011 and currently holds an Extra Class license; his call sign, K9QJS, was first issued to his father (SK) in 1959. He is active on HF virtually daily and reports over 23,000 calls in his logbook. He enjoys all modes, including phone, digital, and CW.
Hoop grew up outside of Chicago, went to undergraduate school in Iowa and to graduate school in California. He worked at Hewlett-Packard for 32 years, retiring as an internal business process improvement advisor and quality manager. He retired to San Juan Island, WA, where he was first licensed, and served the local ham radio club there as club president and ARES emergency coordinator.
He and his wife have three adult sons. They moved to Franklin in 2022 to be close to their three grandchildren.
